My 3 Month Microlocs Update
Date: 06/11/24
Update time: 3 months post installation
How do you feel today: Encouraged
Describe your loc journey so far in one word: Kind
How have things been overall:
I can’t believe I’m already three months into this journey. Time is flying by. Things are still going well. As much as I am eager for my locs to drop and have length, I’m really trying to enjoy this short starter phase, because I don’t think it’s appreciated enough.
Since the last update, I had my 2nd re-tie. My loctician combined 5-6 locs (mostly around the back and in the front) because they were way too small, and with the slippage I was experiencing, I was worried that some were not stable enough to last between reties. She also taught me how to separate my hair at the roots after washing to prevent marrying (I did not know this before). And, she advised me to stop using rods or curlers on my locs since overuse can thin your hair and during this time the hair needs to properly lock. She told me that I should do nothing until my locs mature, which I’m struggling with a bit. I don’t love how my locs frame my face right now because of the shape (so I rarely wear it down), and often keep them in styles pulled away from my face (a few pics below).
I’ve also been more consistent with taking a multi-vitamin daily, iron supplements, drinking enough water, and eating a healthy diet. What you put into your body impacts your hair (in fact your hair can tell you that something is wrong), so I’ve been trying my best to give it all the nutrients it needs to thrive.
What is your maintenance routine?
I’m trying to listen to what my hair needs at any given moment and I’ve found myself spraying them less. Usually once a day I’ll spray my scalp with rose water and massage it through and spritz it lightly on my locs.
I’ve been trying to sleep on a satin pillowcase (without my bonnet) to see if I notice any differences. So far, I feel like it makes my hair loc faster… not sure if this is in my head.
I started using a mixture of spring water, tea tree oil, and lavender oil to spray on my scalp before exercising, but felt it was giving me build up on my scalp so I stopped.
What has been your go-to hairstyle this month?
2 braids (or flat twists) and buns on the ends.
I’ve also been loving adding loose pieces of curly hair to any style to give it a bit more razzle dazzle. I love the way the two textures contrast.
Have their been any challenges with your locs this month?
I’m still dealing with slippage at the back of my head whenever I wash my hair, even though I have been braiding and banding.
I’ve been noticing a lot more build up on my scalp, likely due to how much I sweat in my scalp now that the weather is warmer and my increase in exercise.
What will you do address those challenges?
I’m going to talk to my loctician about washing my hair more frequently to combat some of that build up.
Have any locs fallen out? How many?
Nope! Although at my last retie, we combined a few as a preventative measure.
When is your next retie?
Next week! I love the way my hair feels after my reties and look forward to them.
How much money did you spend on hair products this month?
I spent $14.90 on a bottle of rose water. I noticed I was running through a full bottle every four weeks, so I put myself on a monthly Amazon subscription.
Heritage Store Rose Water: $14.90. I use this to moisturize my scalp and hair daily or whenever I plan to manipulate my hair into a style to soften my microlocs.
